Those Talented Garden Club Women

flowers for the Fourth 2

One would expect that women in a garden club would have a knack for floral arranging and our Greenbrier Home and Garden Club members do not disappoint. Their latest creations claimed the spotlight at the July 4th Celebration.

They mixed store-bought daisies and carnations with acuba and other greens cut from their yards and placed them in red, white and blue plastic cups trimmed with festive Fourth of July garland and topped with a cheery patriotic pinwheel.

In June, the Garden Club hosted Burger Night with a theme of Hawaiian Night. Sally Kiely, Gail Zarello, and Verna Kuyper pulled out all the stops. with show-stopping centerpieces. Clear glass cylinders held seashells and tiny fairy lights twinkled in the water topped by floating fresh Hawaiian blooms flown in by FedEx. The flowers were lavender and purple dendrobium orchids and yellow and white fragrant plumeria. More orchid petals were scattered on the golden mesh ribbons underpinning these arrangements. Add in the multi-colored tablecloths in hot tropical colors and all the attendees wearing leis and for a few short hours we were all transported to Maui.

The flowers used in our Burger Night centerpieces were donated by MauiGoose. Verna Kuyper, Chief Operating Goose (COG), for www.mauigoose.com has been providing Hawaiian flower bouquets and leis online for over 25 years. For many years before opening her online business, she sold flowers from her farm and shop in upcountry Maui on the slopes of Haleakala.

The Garden Club doesn’t just grace Greenbrier with their floral pieces. They also reach out to the greater New Bern community. For the last two years, Hospice hosts a spring-time breakfast to thank their volunteers and they ask local clubs to donate centerpieces.

The 2019 team consisted of Pat Hawkins, Donna Pereira, Rhona Beadle, Marcia Genua, and Gini Gray Together they created eight centerpieces consisting of daisies, carnations, tiny rosebuds, and fern accents nestled in small flowerpots.
